Recently, the latest research results of Professor Zhang Ruifu’s research group from the Soil Microbiology and Organic Fertilizer Team of the School of Resources and Environmental Sciences of Nanjing Agricultural University found that the application of typical rhizosphere probiotic Bacillus SQR9 can not only promote plant growth alone, but its metabolites can also induce indigenous “helper” microorganisms.
-Pseudomonas stutzeri (Pseudomonas stutzeri) is significantly enriched, and together with the strain SQR9, it forms a stable mixed biofilm in the rhizosphere of plants
    .

Metabolic modeling, metabolomics analysis, and functional gene knockout experiments of the synthetic flora proved that the strain SQR9 can cross-feeding with the indigenous Pseudomonas applicans, which broadened the dual flora in the rhizosphere of plants.
Niche breadth, and this metabolic dependence drives the long-term coexistence of two plant probiotics, and synergistically enhances the plant's probiotic ability
    .

The achievement was published under the title of "Bacillus velezensisstimulates resident rhizospherePseudomonas stutzerifor plant health through metabolic interactions", the famous journal "The ISME Journal" in the field of microbial ecology
    .

Based on the above theory, the researchers developed a synthetic microbial fertilizer product based on Bacillus and Pseudomonas.
Pot experiments confirmed that the product can significantly promote plant growth and assist plants in salt tolerance, and the effect is significantly better than single bacteria application
    .

Based on the results of this research, we applied for a patent for microbial fertilizer products
    .

This research has realized a complete closed loop from theoretical exploration to product development, and provided theoretical guidance for the design of more efficient bio-fertilizer flora products
    .

This research is funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the National Key Research and Development Program, and the China Scholarship Council.
Doctoral students Sun Xinli and Associate Professor Xu Zhihui of the School of Resources and Environmental Sciences are the co-first authors of the paper, and Associate Professor Xu Zhihui and Professor Zhang Ruifu are the co-corresponding authors
    .

Professor Shen Qirong, Professor Ákos T.
Kovács, Associate Professor Anna Dragoš of the Technical University of Denmark, etc.
    all participated in the research
    .

In recent years, Zhang Ruifu’s research group has focused on the plant probiotic mechanism of the functional strain of biological fertilizers Bacillus SQR9, and has achieved a series of mechanisms in rhizosphere colonization and film formation, promoting biomass mining, inducing plant system resistance, and antagonizing soil-borne pathogenic bacteria.
