The World Health Organization (WHO) countries in the African region have experienced the COVID-19 pandemic on a large scale
.
Recently, a research article was published in the top medical journal Nature Medicine, which aims to clarify the time and per capita of the first COVID-19 case in WHO African region during the first and second pandemics of COVID-19.
Predictors of mortality, and examine its association with the preparedness of the health system and the government’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic
.
Through a regional, country-based observational study, researchers found that the first COVID-19 case appeared earlier in a country with a large urban population, high international connectivity, and strong COVID-19 detection capabilities.
But it was discovered later in island countries
.
The predictors of the first wave of high per capita mortality include more urban populations, higher international connectivity before the pandemic, and higher HIV prevalence
Countries that are well prepared and have more resilient health systems are most affected by disease, lockdowns, or both, so it is difficult to see any benefits of stricter response strategies
.
The predictor of the second wave is similar to the first wave
The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted Africa’s vulnerability to sudden infectious diseases.
Therefore, it should be emphatically considered in future pandemic preparedness plans
