Immunotherapy enables a patient's own immune system to attack the disease
Their findings were published in the journal Nature in an article titled "Autoreactive Innate T Cell-Mediated Cancer Immune Program
"Cell transformation induces phenotypic diversity in tumor-infiltrating T cells, and immune checkpoint blockade therapy preferentially targets T cells that recognize cancer cell neoantigens," the researchers wrote
"We think these lethal innate T-like cells can be targeted or genetically engineered to treat cancer," explained Dr.
Li's team had reported the existence of this unusual cell population in 2016
In the current study, the researchers used single-cell analysis and CRISPR genome editing to further characterize these cells
They also noticed that the cells also appeared to recognize different markers or antigens on cancer cells
Li's team did most of their experiments in mice, but they confirmed that these killer innate T cells are present in human tumors, including colon cancer tumors from Memorial Sloan-Kettering patients
