Recently, a study published in Neuroology, an authoritative journal in the field of neurology, looked at risk factors for endemic REM sleep behavior disorder (RBD) in a community in Beijing.
researchers recruited participants aged 55 and over from the Beijing Longitudinal Aging Study II (BLSA II) queue and identified possible RBD (pRBD) individuals using a validated RBD questionnaire (Hong Kong) in 2010.
2009, a range of environmental, lifestyle and other potential risk factors were assessed through a standard questionnaire.
researchers conducted a multi-factor Logistic regression analysis to investigate the correlation between the study factors and pRBD.
219 (3.0%) of the 7,225 participants without Parkinson's disease and dementia were thought to have pRBD.
participants with pRBD reported more Parkinson's disease (PD) non-motor and motor symptoms, with an adjusted ratio (OR) from 1.10 to 4.40.
participants with pRBD were more likely to report a family history of Parkinson's disease or dementia (OR was 3.03, with a 95% confidence interval of 1.23-7.46).
pRBD and self-reported hyperlipidemia (OR 1.51, 95% CI 1.09-2.10), past smoking (OR 1.79, 95% CI 1.20-2.65), There was a significant correlation between carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning (OR 2.30, 95% CI 1.39-3.83) and non-occupational exposure to pesticides (OR 2.21, 95% CI 1.40-3.50).
the study further supports previous reports of a link between pRBD and hyperlipidemia, smoking, pesticide exposure, and some pre-empirical PD symptoms.
researchers also found previously unreced results that pRBD is associated with a family history of Parkinson's disease/dementia and CO poisoning.
