Scientists have discovered a new genetic program in fruit flies that can control the development of neurons and protect them from degeneration

Schmucker and his team studied the genetic mechanisms of brain diversity and complexity by studying animal models, Drosophila melanogaster and Xenopus tropicalis
In adult animals, WNK protects existing axons
Schmucker said: "These two functions may be two sides of the same coin
WNK encodes a kinase-an enzyme that adds phosphate groups to other proteins to change their fate or function
These results provide new impetus for understanding how neurodegenerative diseases occur in humans and how to treat them
Experiments conducted by a research team led by Dr.
Schmucker said: "We also know that certain WNK mutations in humans can cause nerve damage, called peripheral neuropathy, and are accompanied by progressive sensory disturbances in the arms and legs
Schmucker hopes that WNK kinase can be used to treat neurodegenerative diseases
