To bond compostable plastic coatings, Follmann and its subsidiary Sealock have developed a sustainable adhesive made from bio-based raw materials.
newly developed adhesive is also used in coffee cups.
for disposable paper cups to be completely compostable, it must be switched to an environmentally friendly material for internal coatings, which is also suitable for adhesives
. Follmann and its subsidiary Sealock have been developing this adhesive. Sealock Group Technology Research and Development Manager George Thomas details a wide range of organic raw materials, related supply chains and innovation potential. "The challenge is to find the right renewable raw materials that can also be used in adhesive applications and industrial-scale adhesive production," explains George Thomas. "Based on in-depth research and work on this topic, we have finally succeeded in developing a new bio-based thermoplastic adhesive, including an in-cup coating for bonding environmentally friendly applications. This sustainable alternative replaces previously environmentally harmful coating bonding. Bio

adhesives are made from recycled sources such as sugar cane or corn. The advantage is that bio-based renewable raw materials can reduce CO2 emissions compared to fossil raw materials in the supply chain.
, however, use in coffee cups is only one of many possible applications. Manufacturers are under pressure to develop and manufacture environmentally friendly alternatives after the European Parliament passed legislation in October 2018 to ban certain plastic products in 2021, such as straws and disposable cutlery and cutlery. New sustainable adhesives can also be used for these, such as paper straws, as well as for different types of packaging, such as breakfast cereals.
