When it rains, plants are not only bathed in rain water, but also in microorganisms

A recent study published in the Phytobiomes Journal was led by Marco mechanl-llontop and Boris Vinatzer, who studied rainwater as a reservoir for bacteria in the phyllosphere

In addition, although rainwater may contain important microorganisms, their numbers may be small—one milliliter of rainwater may contain only a few microbial cells

Their analysis showed that inoculating rainwater microbial communities on plants increased the abundance of more than 100 bacterial groups, indicating that rainwater microorganisms can successfully colonize and grow on the surface of plants
