    Non-toxic silver coating resists and kills bacteria

    Implanted medical devices, such as tubes used to drain wounds or bladders, or tubes that deliver drugs directly into the bloodstream, can quickly become overrun by bacteria, creating a dangerous risk of infection


    Researchers have been working to develop antibacterial coatings, including those that contain silver, which kills microorganisms


    Silver also has toxic effects on human cells, for example, it is difficult to create a coating that releases small amounts of the metal consistently over a long period of time


    Lange, Kizhakkedathu and colleagues wanted to find a silver-containing formula to overcome these and other difficulties

    In in vivo tests, the team applied the SAFE coating to the surface of titanium implants, which were then placed under the skin of rats


    The SAFE coating also appears tough, with little to no wear after being rubbed and sterilized in harsh conditions


    Nonetheless, the researchers concluded: "In this work, we developed SAFE components that form silver coatings with long-term bacterial-free adhesion (>30 days) and no silver toxicity, both in vitro and in vivo.
