The ionosphere is a number of thin-walled cell layers that are separated from the leaf shank or leaf base, wherein two or more layers adjacent to the leaf handle overlap, called the off-layer layer, while the cell layer connected to the stem is the protective layer. Changes in the cell walls of ionizing cells, such as mucus in the middle layer, can cause cells to separate from each other, and because of the gravity and other mechanical effects of the leaves themselves, they break at the ionosphere, causing deciduous leaves. After deciduous leaves, the protective layer has a peri-skin occurrence, protecting the fractured surface and forming leaf marks. Flower terriers and fruit branches also often occur off-level, resulting in falling flowers and fruit.
