    PacBio organizes SMRT funding activities every year

    This year's 2021 Plant and Animal SMRT Grant will provide scientists with free PacBio sequencing to support the discovery of agricultural genomics


    When studying animals and plants, researchers can use haplotype-resolved genomes to better explore evolution and functional variation
    .


    Through haplotype analysis pan-genome, scientists can associate traits with haplotypes, capture structural variation across the entire population, and decipher the complex traits required for marker development


    This year's SMRT animal and plant grant recipients will have the opportunity to use the breakthrough Sequel IIe system to perform genetic analysis on their favorite plants or animals
    .


    Specifically, it includes bioinformatics support, SMRTbell library preparation and free sequencing of up to 6 8M SMRT chips


    PacBio recently announced that three researchers have received funding for this event, including Dr.
    Sean Myles, the lead researcher of the Apple Diversity Lab in Canada
    .

    Dr.
    Myles and his team, including researchers Zoë Migicovsky, Sophie Watts, and Tom Davies, are studying the immense diversity of apples in the Annapolis Valley, trying to cultivate new varieties that are delicious and require fewer chemicals to grow
    .


    The work they do is vital to future food production


    After receiving funding, Zoë, Sophie and Tom plan to perform pan-genome sequencing and assembly of the apples grown in their orchards
    .


    There are more than 1,000 unique cultivated varieties in this apple biodiversity orchard, and it is one of the most diverse orchards in the world


    To maximize the number of haplotypes, they used a tool called SV Collector to identify 10 individuals that accurately represented the genetic diversity of the orchard
    .


    After establishing this powerful haplotype analysis pan-genome, they plan to use these data to protect the biodiversity of apples and better associate complex traits such as ripening time, flowering time, and sugar content with genetic and structural variations.
