Nitrogen fertilizer is the most widely used type of fertilizer

This sensor, called a chemically functionalized paper-based electrical gas sensor (chemPEGS), measures the level of ammonium in the soil, which is a compound that is converted into nitrite and nitrate by soil bacteria

This research determines how this new low-cost solution can help growers harvest the most crops with the least amount of fertilizer, especially for crops that require fertilizers such as wheat

The lead researcher of the study, Dr Max Grell from the Department of Bioengineering at Imperial College London, is a co-developer of this technology.
