Pictured: University of Illinois kinesiology graduate student Kevin Paulussen (left), kinesiology and community health professor Nicholas Burd and their colleagues discovered that dileucine C is a peptide formed by the chemical combination of two leucines.

In a randomized controlled study of 10 healthy young men, researchers compared the effects of the intake of a single amino acid leucine or its equivalent bimolecular dileucine on muscle building and breakdown

Their findings are published in the "Journal of Applied Physiology"

Leucine, isoleucine, and valine are all branched-chain amino acids, which are known among bodybuilders and health enthusiasts for their alleged muscle-building benefits

Digestion breaks the chemical bonds between the amino acids that make up the protein, resulting in a mixture of short molecules including free amino acids and dipeptides

He said: "However, there are few studies on whether dileucine in the diet enters the blood as a dipeptide or is first broken down into two leucine molecules

In this new study, participants entered the laboratory after fasting for 12 hours and were injected with a stable isotope, a chemical probe that allows researchers to track the process of muscle protein synthesis and breakdown

"After that, we fed them 2 grams of leucine or 2 grams of dileucine," Burd said

"We found that when participants took dileucine, leucine entered the blood faster than when they had only free leucine," Burd said

He said that the next question is whether dileucine has any effect on the muscle building process

"So, we studied the signaling pathways of the muscle building process, including protein breakdown as part of the remodeling process

People who consume dileucine synthesize 42% more new muscle protein than those who consume only leucine

Bird said: "From this perspective, exercise alone can increase the muscle-building response by 100-150%

Researchers also show that animal protein is the best source of dileucine in the diet

"We don't yet know the mechanism by which dileucine works," Burd said
