SAW Diagnostics announced that Innovate UK has awarded the company a grant of 1.5 million pounds to support its low-cost sample preparation system for infectious disease detection and other applications. The Innovate UK program, which requires industry support, will fund the development of the company's integrated sample processing technology platform over the next two years. The platform is designed to conduct molecular testing directly from a range of "near patients" and a range of complex clinical samples in the research environment.Funded from the latest Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) strategy, it outlines the UK government's plans for antimicrobial resistance over the next five and 20 years - with the development and access to effective diagnosis a key objective.“ Automatic nucleic acid extraction from a variety of complex sample types is a major bottleneck in today's clinical trials, often requiring samples to be sent to remote laboratories for expert analysis," said Dr. Iain Miller, CEO of SAW Dx. The new award, along with equity financing the company is currently raising, will help the company secure its foothold in the growing instant sample preparation and diagnostics market, while also opening up other potential research applications. " immediate tests provide almost immediate results, enabling clinicians to optimize treatment decisions while patients are still in the clinic, rather than prescribing unnecessary antibiotics, as is often the case today."
