Hebrew University of Israel recently announced that its research team has developed a new treatment for glioblastoma, a malignant brain tumor, using genetic modification techniques.
, a professor at the School of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the University of Hebrew, and others have designed a molecule that inhibits the growth of glioblastoma by affecting specific genes, the statement said.
study showed that the MKNK2 gene in the human body is selectively clipped to produce two functioning proteins, one that inhibits the growth of tumors such as glioblastoma and the other that supports tumor growth. Carney et al. have designed a molecule that can alter the shearing of the MKNK2 gene, reduce the number of proteins that support tumor growth, and increase the amount of protein that inhibits tumor growth, thereby reducing or completely disappearing tumor cells.
, the molecule not only inhibits the tumor cells themselves, but also makes them re-sensitive to chemotherapy, improving its effectiveness.
study found that mice treated with glioblastoma with this new method had their tumors significantly reduced or disappeared altogether.
glioblastoma is considered an almost incurable brain tumor, and one of the major difficulties in treatment is its strong resistance to chemotherapy drugs.
findings are published in the new issue of the British journal Nucleic Acid Research. (Source: Xinhua News Agency, Chen Wenxian)
