Scotland's salmon producers organisation (SSPO) said the first batch of salmon in Scotland had been officially shipped to Saudi Arabia in 18 months, opening up new market opportunities.
The first batch of salmon from MOWI arrived in Dammam on 21 November to reopen the door to Saudi Arabia as a result of saudi changes to its sea import regulations in 2019, which prevented Scottish salmon from entering the Saudi Arabian market.
Scottish Development International (SDI), Scottish Seafood and SSPO have been working to overcome this barrier to trade and ensure new market access. Taviish Scott, chief executive of
SSPO, said the turmoil and uncertainty in export markets this year, caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, was a welcome sign for the Scottish salmon export industry after successfully overcoming trade barriers from Saudi Arabia.
MOWI said Saudi Arabia was the largest market in the Middle East, with Scottish salmon meeting the demand for high-quality salmon, Saudi Arabians focusing on a healthy diet and Scottish salmon matching the quality.
also thanked SDI, Scottish Seafood and SSPO for their support, as well as MOWI's production line in Scotland, making it possible to re-enter the Saudi Arabian market.
the country's sea product regulations in Saudi Arabia, Scottish salmon exports to saudi Arabia are estimated to be around 200,000 pounds a year.
