South Africa's agricultural exports will reach $10.2 billion (about 150 billion rand) in 2020, up 3 percent from a year earlier and the second-highest level after a record $10.7 billion in 2018, according to data released Monday by the South African Daily Business Daily.
agriculture sector contributed about 3% of GDP and created nearly 900,000 jobs.
agricultural exports boomed mainly due to good weather conditions, high domestic agricultural production and a relatively weak local currency that made South African agricultural products more competitive in the global market.
Agbiz says the top 10 exports by value are citrus, grapes, wine, apples and pears, corn, nuts, sugar, wool and fruit juice.
, South Africa's agricultural imports fell 8 per cent year-on-year to $5.9bn in 2020, while the agricultural trade surplus rose 26 per cent year-on-year to $4.3bn.
Agbiz expects South Africa's agricultural exports to grow further in 2021 as more favourable conditions lead to an increase in summer crop areas and a promising corn harvest.
