Original title: Stick to breakfast and be slimmer
To reduce calorie intake, people who choose not to eat breakfast have gone a long way, as a new US study shows that people who stick to breakfast every day are slimmer.
Somos, a cardiologist at Mayo Medical Center in the United States, and his team followed 347 adults for 12 years. Initially, 11 percent of people who ate breakfast were obese, and those who didn't eat breakfast had a 27 percent obesity rate, a difference that became increasingly apparent over the next 12 years of the study. The weight control of people who ate breakfast every day was stable, with an average weight gain of less than 3 pounds (about 1.4 kg) over the study period. By contrast, people who sometimes don't eat breakfast gain an average of 5 pounds (about 2.3 kilograms) and those who don't eat breakfast gain 8 pounds (about 3.6 kilograms). Of particular concern is that after ignoring breakfast, the weight gain is mainly in the abdomen, where the toxins produced by these fat "swimming rings" can damage blood vessels.
late last year, research by the University of Bath and the University of Nottingham found that people who regularly eat breakfast are at risk of diabetes and heart disease. People should pay more attention to the importance of breakfast for weight management. Experts suggest that a healthy breakfast should include fresh fruits, vegetables and whole grains.
