A new study finds that an oral tablet containing cannabidiol (CBD) can be effective in reducing pain after shoulder surgery without safety concerns

The study, led by researchers in NYU Langone Health's Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, found that ORAVEXXTM tablets can safely manage pain after minimally invasive tendon cuff surgery without the side effects associated with CBD use, such as nausea, anxiety and liver toxicity

"There is an urgent need to find viable alternatives to pain management, and our study shows that this form of CBD is the result of arthroscopic rotator cuff repair," said lead investigator Michael J.

The multicenter Phase 1/2 clinical trial randomized 99 participants between the ages of 18 and 75 to a placebo or oral CBD group

On the first day after surgery, patients receiving CBD experienced an average 23% reduction in visual analog scale (VAS) pain scores compared to patients receiving placebo, highlighting that, for patients with moderate pain, CBD may will bring significant benefits

While the findings are promising, Dr.

ORAVEXX®, an orally absorbent tablet used in this study, was designed and manufactured by Orcosa, a life sciences company

Next, NYU Langone Health launched a second study to see if ORAVEXX® could specifically treat chronic pain in people with osteoarthritis
