a new report called The Cost of Cancer, the total financial burden of cancer in the UK is staggering as high as 7.6 billion pounds. In particular, the study assessed lost wages and benefits and highlighted that once diagnosed with cancer and their families and friends, they faced serious financial difficulties and disadvantages in the job market. So many that about half of people are forced to change their way of working, and as many as 53 percent of cancer patients see their income drop by at least one income level. In addition, women appear to be the most affected, with 55 per cent of women changing their working styles after diagnosis, compared with 40 per cent of men.“ Cancer Costs: A Chain Reaction Analysis of the Wider Impact of Cancer found that these changes ranged from unpaid leave to resignation, as women struggled to reach their previous income levels after cancer, compared with 55 percent of women who received low incomes, compared with 51 percent of men.The study also showed that cancer affects people around patients in a similar way, with 20 percent of cancer patients currently supported by family or friends who change the way they work to take care of themselves. The report says adverse changes such as these have led to 76 percent of people with a negative impact on family life, while another 66 percent say cancer has a severe impact on their social lives.According to the findings, Demos, the research think-tank, revealed that the UK needs to spend s2.1bn a year on cancer to reach the EU average, more than half (51 per cent) of the extra money the government recently allocated to the NHS in 2019-2020 and 2020-2021.It also urged the government to "raise NHS spending on cancer to the EU average by 2030" and introduce a "Finnish model" of part-time sick leave benefits. The report "reinforces the information That Macmillan hears daily from cancer patients about the serious financial impact of his diagnosis," commented Dr Moira Fraser-Pearce, head of cancer support policy at Macmillan. She added: "The financial problems faced by cancer patients are diverse and complex. We want governments, the NHS, businesses and the voluntary sector across the UK to work together to find solutions so that financial hardship is less important for people affected by cancer. There2.5 million people in the UK currently have cancer, a figure that could be as high as four million by 2030. (cyy123.com)
