The first confirmed case of H10N3 avian influenza

China’s National Health Commission (NHC) said Tuesday that a 41-year-old man in the eastern province of Jiangsu has been confirmed as the first human case of H10N3 avian influenza

There are many different strains of avian influenza virus in China.

There is no indication that H10N3 can spread easily in the human body

The man, a resident of Zhenjiang City, was hospitalized on April 18 and was diagnosed with H10N3 on May 28, the health committee said

H10N3 is low pathogenic, which means that it causes relatively mild disease in poultry and is unlikely to cause a large-scale outbreak

"This virus is not a very common virus," said Filip Claes, regional laboratory coordinator of the Transboundary Animal Disease Emergency Center of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the Asia and Pacific Regional Office

Since the H7N9 strain caused about 300 deaths in 2016-2017, the number of humans infected with avian influenza has not been high
