The latest study by Professor Wu Yangfeng from the Peking University Clinical Research Institute and Professor Bruce Neal from the George Institute for Global Health found that as long as the Chinese people change the ordinary salt in the kitchen to low-sodium salt when cooking, they can significantly reduce the risk of stroke and heart disease.

The low-sodium salt used in the study called SSaSS (Salt Substitute and Stroke Study) contains approximately 75% sodium chloride and 25% potassium chloride, which is a low-sodium, high-potassium salt substitute
Professor Wu Yangfeng said: “Eat too much salt leads to a large number of patients with high blood pressure, which in turn leads to frequent strokes, heart disease and premature death
Potassium-containing salt substitutes (red line) reduced stroke (A), major cardiovascular events (B) and death (C), and did not increase serious adverse events caused by hyperkalemia (D) (Image source original)
The SSaSS research was carried out in 600 villages in China's Hebei Province, Liaoning Province, Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, Shanxi Province and Shaanxi Province, with assistance from Hebei Provincial Center for Disease Control and Prevention, China Medical University, Ningxia Medical College, Changzhi Medical College and Xi’an Jiaotong University Jointly completed by the Peking University Health Science Center and the George Institute of Health in Australia
During an average follow-up of nearly 5 years, about 3000 people had a new stroke
The above research results show that: low sodium salt is not only effective, but also safe
About table salt and health*
Globally, excessive intake of salt (over 5 grams per day) causes 3 million deaths each year from heart disease, stroke and related diseases
Of the above deaths, four-fifths came from low- and middle-income countries, and nearly half were under 70 years of age
The average global salt intake is almost twice the recommended salt intake
Among 187 countries, there are 181 countries (99% of the world's total population) whose average salt intake exceeds the 5 grams per day recommended by the World Health Organization, which is close to one tablespoon of salt
