The Alaska Bay Pacific cod fishing industry is expected to regain MSC certification from the Marine Regulatory Commission after a 15-day review period, but regulators are still determining the fish's health status, so the Alaska Pacific cod fishing industry remains "suspended" pending a decision to allow targeted fishing of the species.
The U.S. Marine Commission decided in April to suspend MSC certification to the Alaska Pacific cod fishing industry after a 2019 National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration fisheries researcher found that existing biomass could not be subject to fishing pressure.
, under federal regulations, fishing in the region is prohibited if targeted fishing of a particular population results in less than 40 per cent of the available biomass.
the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) believe that by 2020 Alaska Pacific cod fishing will reduce the amount of biomass in the waters to 20 percent of the total.
the number of Alaskan Pacific cod has been declining since 2017, with fishing quotas reduced by 80 per cent in 2018 and 2019 to 13,096 tonnes in 2018 to encourage recovery.
pacific cod fishing industry in Alaska was first certified to MSC standards in April 2010.
