    Cardiovascular Health and Brain Aging

The relationship between cardiovascular health and brain aging

    Reviewed by Jennifer Rose V.

Behavioral, biological, and genetic markers of cardiovascular health correlate
with MRI markers of cerebrovascular aging.

    Cardiovascular health (CVH) is associated
    with brain health.
To further explore this relationship, researchers surveyed 317 Swedish adults (age, ≥ 60 years; 62% were women) to determine the association
between overall, behavioral, and biological characteristics of CVH and metabolic genetic risk factors and MRI markers of cerebrovascular aging.

According to the American Heart Association (AHA) CVH's "Life's Simple 7", researchers based their baseline on 4 behavioral factors (smoking, physical activity, eating habits and body mass index) and 3 biological factors (total cholesterol, blood pressure and fasting blood glucose) classified the participants' CVH characteristics as good, moderate, and poor
    .
The metabolic genetics risk score is determined
based on the presence of risk alleles for hypertension, diabetes, or dyslipidemia in DNA taken from whole blood samples.
Participants underwent baseline brain MRI scans and one or more follow-up brain MRI scans
    over a 6-year period.

The results adjusted for age, gender and education level are as follows:
    • Good or moderate population CVH features are associated with slower progression of white matter hyperintensity (WMH) compared with
      poor overall CVH features.
    • Compared with undesirable CVH features, moderate behavioral CVH features were associated with
      slower progression of WMH.
    • Compared with adverse biological CVH characteristics, moderate and good biological CVH characteristics were associated with
slower rate of gray matter atrophy.
    • A high score is associated with faster progression of WMH compared with a low metabolic genetics risk score, except
in patients with good overall or behavioral CVH characteristics.
    • Compared with a low metabolic genetic risk score, a moderate score is associated with
a faster rate of gray matter atrophy.

These results further demonstrate the importance of improving CVH for brain health
    .
The AHA recently revised CVH's "7 Rules of Simple Life" to add sleep health to make up Life's Essential 8
    .
Whether adding sleep health to CVH signatures affects MRI markers of cerebrovascular aging remains to be determined
    .
