    They examined the intestinal health of 187 individuals between 28 and 97 years old.

    Each participant completed a self-survey questionnaire measuring loneliness, wisdom, compassion, social support, and social participation.

    The researchers also analyzed the participants’ stool samples to determine the status of their gut microbiome.

    First, they search for the ecological diversity (α diversity) of each person's intestinal flora, and then compare the differences between individuals (β diversity).

    Researchers found that lower loneliness and higher intelligence, compassion, social support, and participation were significantly associated with greater alpha diversity in the gut microbiome.

    Who is the cause? Who is the fruit? Although the results of this study found a connection between the two, the researchers said that they still don't know what causes the connection between wisdom, loneliness, and gut microbial diversity.

    Researchers have indeed observed that the decrease in gut microbial diversity can lead to deterioration of physical and mental health.

    This also increases the risk of obesity, inflammatory bowel disease and depression.

    These results are consistent with those obtained in the field of intestinal microbiome research.

    Researchers believe that loneliness may lead to a decrease in the stability of the intestinal flora, thereby reducing the body's resistance and recovery ability to cope with stress-related disturbances, which in turn leads to downstream physiological effects, such as systemic inflammation.

    A healthy and diverse intestinal flora can buffer the negative effects of chronic stress or help shape social behavior that promotes wisdom.

    The decrease in alpha diversity may not represent an obvious disease state, but it is indeed not the best state for disease prevention.

    Therefore, people with higher loneliness may be more susceptible to different types of diseases.

    Studies have found that this link between loneliness and microbial diversity seems to be closer in the elderly.

    These results are also consistent with previous studies that found that elderly people are particularly vulnerable to health problems due to loneliness.

    So, does a healthier intestine make people smarter, or does a smarter and happier person have a healthier intestine? Regardless of who is the cause, research has found that greater social support can prevent problems related to loneliness in the human microbiome.

    It can make people better cope with stress, and help shape individual behavior and enhance wisdom.

    The researchers pointed out that their study does have some limitations, including the lack of data on each person’s social network, diet, and degree of social isolation.

    Therefore, more large-scale and longer-term research is needed.
