Atrial-selective deletion of AMPK causes atrial fibrillation in mice

Research from the Yale University School of Medicine shows that protein kinases are master regulators of cellular metabolism and are critical for the prevention of atrial fibrillation

The link between metabolic stress and atrial fibrillation is unclear, said Lawrence H.

"We need to understand the mechanisms linking metabolic disease and the development of atrial fibrillation," Young said

The research team used transgenic mice to explore the biological effects of amp-activated protein kinase (AMPK) in the atria, the upper chambers of the heart

The authors also found that the Pitx2c and mef2c transcription factors, which are critical in cardiac development, are affected by AMPK loss and play critical roles in maintaining normal atrial molecular programming

While further research is needed, the findings suggest that reduced AMPK activity in older patients with metabolic diseases such as diabetes and obesity may contribute to the development of atrial enlargement and electrical dysfunction

Atrial fibrillation is the most common cardiac arrhythmia or arrhythmia
