There are more than 120 species in 7 genera in the family Costaceae, which are mainly distributed in pan-tropical regions
In order to further explore the phylogenetic relationship of this genus, Xia Nianhe's research team from the Plant Science Research Center of the South China Botanical Garden, Chinese Academy of Sciences sampled most of the species of Lettuce genus in China and Vietnam, and reconstructed lettuce using the chloroplast genome and two chloroplast gene fragments.
Based on the above findings, the team established a new genus, Parahellenia NH Xia, Juan Chen, LY Zeng & S.
The research results have been recently published in the international academic journal Plant Diversity .
