. Government will fund phase III clinical trials of three new coronavirus candidate vaccines, said Anthony Fucci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and a key member of the White House Coronavirus Response Task Force. In an interview with U.S. media, Folch said the mRNA-1273 vaccine developed by Modner will be the first to begin Phase III clinical trials in July; the vaccine, developed jointly by Astra-Jericon of the United Kingdom and Oxford University, will begin Phase III clinical trials in August; and the new crown vaccine from Johnson and Johnson will begin Phase III clinical trials in September.Mr Fucci said clinical trials of the vaccine were planned to keep pace with his previously anticipated schedule, with large-scale applications of the new crown vaccine until the end of the year or early next year. Each of the three clinical trials will be conducted in more than 50 locations, most of them in the United States, where 30,000 people will participate, CNN reported.Robert Scully, director of the Department of Infectious Diseases at the University of California, San Diego, told Xinhua that it is relatively easy for candidate vaccines to enter Phase I clinical trials and that conditions such as enabling the immune system to recognize viruses need to be met. After the safety of the candidate vaccine and the induced immune response are evaluated in Phase I and Phase II clinical trials, the vaccine with significant results will enter the larger Phase III clinical trial. Phase III clinical trials require a larger sample size, primarily to assess the effectiveness of vaccines in reducing infection rates, etc.In mid-May, U.S. President Donald Trump announced a plan called Operation Curvature to accelerate research into new crown vaccines, drugs, testing and other areas, and said he looked forward to developing a new crown vaccine by the end of the year.
