Chinese research team found that a natural small molecule in green tea can become the cell's "manipulator", allowing certain customized cells to "listen" and thus release therapeutic drugs at a timed and quantitative rate.In a paper published recently in the American journal Science Translational Medicine, the
team said they used the primary metabolite of green tea, the primary acrylic acid, to design and synthesize a
-expression control system that, like a "switch," can be regulated by primary acuity.
researchers installed the control system in human-sourced cells and encoded specific gene fragments in which drugs such as insulin can be produced and released under the control of primary teac acid. When these cells are implanted into the human body, it is expected that people will only need to drink custom concentrated green tea to give the medicine.
Ye Haifeng, a researcher at the Center for Medical Synthesis Biology at East China Normal University, told Xinhua that the drugs produced by these gene fragments can be neither antibodies that boost the body's immunity, enzymes that remove harmful molecules in the body, or insulin that lowers blood sugar.
Ye Haifeng's team selected insulin for testing, and they designed and synthesized customized cells that accurately regulate insulin expression release and wrapped them in microcapsules and transplanted them into animals through the abdominal cavity.
studies have shown that diabetic mice can obtain insulin on a timed, quantitative and continuous rate, controlling the stability of blood sugar in the body, without taking or injecting insulin on a daily rate, simply by orally customized concentrated green tea or primary tea acid. The work has also been validated in primate monkeys.
researchers also combined gene editing techniques to make green tea act as a regulatory switch for gene editing to manipulate gene expression and editing. Studies have confirmed that the control system can also perform complex logic operations, which are expected to be used in biological computers in the future. (Source: Xinhua News Agency Zhou zhou)
