A neuroscience study published November 22 in Nature Communications shows that the female brain leads to selective and significant changes in neural structure and neural network organization during pregnancy, which may lead to maternal behaviors during pregnancy and postpartum, such as nest building, snuggling heating, breastfeeding, physiological responses such as helping with bowel movements, and mother-infant attachment
    .

To study how pregnancy causes changes in brain structure, the team conducted four experiments on 40 female participants in four stages: preconception, third trimester, postpartum and postpartum, in addition to tracking 28 women for one year after giving birth
    .
It was found that pregnancy led to strong selective changes in neural structure and neural network organization, and pregnancy-related enhancements in the functional connections of DMN (the most active group of connected brain regions in the mother's resting state); The pattern of loss of gray matter volume at 1 year postpartum versus preconception was highly similar to that observed when compared with baseline in the early postpartum period and preconception, suggesting that pregnancy-related brain changes remained evident
    at 1 year postpartum.
In addition, the results of the study also showed that DMN functional activity during pregnancy correlated with measurements of mother-infant attachment in the postpartum period, with gray matter volume increasing throughout the postpartum period and partially reversed to preconception levels
    .
Thus, previously observed changes in gray matter volume during pregnancy were confirmed to be related to pregnancy hormone levels, but no changes
in white matter structure were observed during pregnancy.
The results showed that pregnancy hormones are the main factors that trigger and regulate pregnancy-related neuroplasticity, and also found a potential association between DMN functional activity during pregnancy and maternal behavior during pregnancy and the postpartum period.
