Tobacco Control: This... research shows that people exposed to secondhand smoke have a 51% increased risk of oral cancer

Oral cancer is the general term for malignant tumors that occur in the oral cavity, causing more than 440,000 new cases and more than 220,000 deaths worldwide each year.

Important risk factors for oral cancer include: smoking, drinking alcohol and chewing betel nut.

However, not only smokers are affected by this, but many non-smokers are also affected.

Previous studies have shown that exposure to secondhand smoke can cause a variety of diseases, including lung cancer.

Recently, international research teams from Portugal, the United Kingdom, Spain and the United States published a paper titled: Secondhand smoke exposure and oral cancer risk: a systematic review and meta-analysis in the Tobacco Control journal under BMJ.

The paper reviewed and analyzed five relevant studies that have been conducted in Asia, Europe, North America, and Latin America, involving 6,977 people, of which 3,452 were exposed to second-hand smoke and 3,525 were not exposed to second-hand smoke.

The research team believes that this systematic review and meta-analysis supports the causal relationship between secondhand smoke exposure and oral cancer.

The research team also stated that this study has increased the understanding of the hazards of second-hand smoke exposure and provided guidance for public health professionals, researchers and policy makers to formulate and provide effective second-hand smoke exposure prevention plans.
