    Ukraine issues plastic bag ban

    On June 9, 2021, Ukraine issued Law No.
    1489-IX, prohibiting the distribution of certain plastic bags in retail and catering services .
    The law will be implemented from March 10, 2022 .
     
    According to the definition in the new law, the meanings of "lightweight plastic bags", "ultra-light plastic bags" and "oxidatively degradable plastic bags" are as follows:
     
    -"Lightweight plastic bags" refer to plastic bags with a wall thickness of 15 to 50 microns (micrometers);
     
    —— "Ultra-light plastic bag" refers to a plastic bag with a wall thickness of less than 15 microns;
     
    —— "Oxidatively degradable plastic bag" refers to a plastic bag composed of polyethylene and oxidatively degradable additives
    .
     
    The new law requires the distribution of plastic bags to be carried out entirely on a paid basis, and the retail price of these bags shall not be lower than the minimum price set by the Ukrainian cabinet
    .
     
    Biodegradable plastic bags are determined by unified European standards, and bags that meet these requirements should be marked accordingly
    .
    Marking applies to every plastic bag, and the procedure for marking such plastic bags is approved by the Cabinet
    .
    It is prohibited to use biological (б?о), biological packaging (б?опакет), biodegradable (б?орозкладний) and other words on plastic bags that do not meet these requirements
    .
     
    Exemption: Biodegradable plastic bags (must comply with unified European standards and be marked separately); plastic bags with the lightest weight used for packaging and/or transporting fresh fish, meat and related products, up to 225 mm wide (without sides) Folding), up to 345 mm deep (with side folding), up to 450 mm long (with handle), bulk products and ice as primary packaging (valid until January 1, 2023)
