A study in Australia and the UK shows that fast walking reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease for almost any age group, particularly for people over 60, reducing their risk of dying from a stroke or heart attack by more than 50 per cent.
Australian and British researchers compared 11 population surveys from 1994 to 2008, which recorded the walking speed of 50,000 people, excluding factors such as individual exercise, age, gender and height BMI. They found that for people over the age of 30, walking quickly reduced the risk of death from almost any disease by more than 20 percent. For people over 60, the risk of dying from a heart attack or stroke is 53% lower than for peers who normally walk more slowly.
researchers define fast walking as walking an average of 5 to 7 kilometers per hour, depending on an individual's health. "Keeping yourself sweating or breathing at a pace is another indicator," said Emmanuel Stammatakis, a professor at the University of Sydney who led the study.
