In a recently published study, scientists studied the wear resistance and hydrophobicity of PTFE/CF composite coatings.
fiber (CF) reinforced Teflon (PTFE) composite coatings for PDC drill bits are expected to improve friction and wear performance as well as hydrophobicity.

. Carbon fiber (CF) reinforced Teflon (PTFE) composite coatings are expected to be used in PDC drill bits to improve friction and wear performance and hydrophobicity. In a new study, a special method was used to prepare a PTFE/CF composite coating with different CF content. The quality scores of CF in PTFE are 10%, 15% and 20%, respectively. The surface shape of the coating is observed by scanning electron microscopes (SEMs) and 3D, and the water contact angle (WCA) is measured.the
wear rate is reduced and the hydrophobicity is good
the results show that when the quality score of CF is 20%, the coefficient of friction is 0.17±0.01, which does not increase much× The WCA of the PTFE / 20%CF composite coating has been increased to 122.0 degrees ±2.0 degrees, showing good hydrophobicity, while the WCA of the pure PTFE coating is only 106.3 degrees ±1.5 degrees. Abrasive wear and adhesive wear are the main wear conditions of composite coatings under air conditions.
the study was published in Progress in Organic Coatings, volume 128, March 2019, pp. 90-98.
