    The origin and evolution of plant taxa with discontinuous distribution in East Asia and North America is a hotspot in plant evolution and biogeography research .
    Berberidaceae ( Berberidaceae ) Podophylloideae ( Podophylloideae ) plants contain podophyllotoxin , is a famous anti-cancer medicinal plants, showing a typical East Asia - Eastern North America ( EA-ENA ) discontinuous distribution .
    This subfamily includes 4 genera and 12 species, of which Dysosma is endemic to China and includes 7 species; Diphylleia includes 3 species , namely D.
     cymosa , Japanese mountain lotus ( D.
    grayi
    ) and southern mountain lotus ( D.
    sinensis
    ); Podophyllum ( Podophyllum ) of eastern North America) and the genus Sinopodophyllum distributed in the Himalayas and adjacent areas only include one species
    .


    For a long time, the phylogenetic relationship between this subfamily, genus and species has been controversial, and the formation mechanism of its discontinuous distribution and regional differences in species diversity is also unclear


    Recently, researcher Qiu Yingxiong of the East Asian Plant Evolution, Conservation and Utilization Subject Group of Wuhan Botanical Garden published a research paper entitled "Phylogenomics and diversification drivers of the Eastern Asian – Eastern North American disjunct Podophylloideae" in the journal Molecular Phylogenetics and Evolution .


    This study uses phylogenetic genomics to construct a highly supported phylogenetic tree, combined with biogeographical analysis , to reveal the formation process of the EA-ENA discontinuous distribution pattern of this subfamily, and the reasons for the imbalance of species diversity in East Asia and North America .
    The specific research results are as follows :

     

    First, the results of the single-copy phylogenetic tree screened based on the transcriptome showed that Podophyllum, Illicium and Lily were all monophyletic, and the genus Peach was the most basal group of Podophyllum, which differentiated into Lily in turn.

    Ye Wenqing, a doctoral student at Zhejiang University, and Zhu Shanshan, a postdoctoral fellow at Zhejiang University are the co-first authors of the paper, and researcher Qiu Yingxiong of Wuhan Botanical Garden is the corresponding author
