In the evolutionary history of vertebrates, the appearance of myelin has made the transmission of nerve signals much faster.

Oligodendrocytes have a thousand-fold larger surface area during differentiation and undergo very active cargo transport

On April 2, 2022, Zhang Liang's team of our hospital and Wang Zhanxiang's team of the First Affiliated Hospital published a research result entitled Sec13 promotes oligodendrocyte differentiation and myelin repair through autocrine pleiotrophin signaling in the Journal of Clinical Investigation, which was the first discovery of COPII-mediated The autocrine function of oligodendrocytes plays an important role in oligodendrocyte differentiation and remyelination, providing new ideas for the treatment of demyelination-related diseases

In this study, the authors first confirmed that COPII-mediated vesicle transport is beneficial to myelination, and inhibition of COPII vesicle transport leads to a decrease in myelin regeneration ability

Mechanistically, the authors demonstrate that Sec13 is involved in the process of myelination through the autocrine secretion of PTN

Finally, in a lysolecithin-induced myelin injury model, the authors found that PTN expression was upregulated after myelin injury

The corresponding authors of the study are Associate Professor Zhang Liang from the School of Life Sciences and Professor Wang Zhanxiang from the First Affiliated Hospital of Xiamen University.
