In 2017, the staff of the Garden and Horticulture Department of the Panna Botanical Garden, Shen Jianyong, Yu Houcheng and others in Pu'er area to carry out the "Southwestern-Southern region native plants full coverage protection plan" project target species survey, found an unknown autumn sea otter genus plants, introduced back to the Panna Botanical Garden nursery cultivation. Subsequently, the Botanical Garden Plant Introduction and Information Management Group Wang Wenguang, Shen Jianyong and Ma Xingda, etc. in the nursery autumn sea otter genus plant inventory, identification found that it may be a new species.
Researchers found that the species is very similar in form to the powdered autumn sea otters from Ma Lipo County, Yunnan Province, but its raw flower stems, leaf handles and flower-ordered stalks and sub-rooms have red pinstripes, and the stems and leaf handles have very short cladding hair, leaf wide ovoids, small slivers,fruit wings longer, can be significantly different from the latter.

according to the introduction, at present, only one residential group was found in the wild, the number of less than 100 plants, and the distribution point is not in the protected area. The new species is provisionally assessed as critically endangered, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature's (IUCN) Endangered Species Rating.
