Immune platelet reduction (ITP) in children is generally considered a relatively light blood disease, and only a few patients need treatment for painful bleedingIn recent years, the disease has been found in some adults with a wider impact on the body, particularly with fatigue and cognitive impairmentrecently published a study in the journal British Journal of Blood System Diseases, in which researchers sought to investigate the effects in ITP children and learn more about their psychological conditionThe researchers asked children and their parents who attended regular hematology clinics to fill out standardized questionnaires to assess a range of psychological and cognitive factorsalthough the majority of children scored within the normal range, a high proportion of children with fatigue (70.6 per cent), emotional and behavioural symptoms (25.7 per cent) or executive dysfunction (19.4 per cent)Subjective assessments of quality of life and disease were significantly related to these areas, but were not correlated with the severity of bleeding and platelet counts, the findings of the study provide valuable insight into the impact on ITP children, which may help to provide holistic treatment strategies, help make relevant medical decisions, and guide future research
