On October 15, 2007, Health Canada announced that it had received an application to allow a mixture of potassium acetylfame-potassium, sucralose, or two sweeteners for canned standard fruits, including canned apples, peaches, pears, pineapples, grapefruit, canned Mandarin honey citrus and non-standard fruits, including canned fruits and tropical fruit salads.
limits of 0.007% and 0.025%, respectively, for potassium acesulfame-potassium and sucralose in these products.
assessment of the available data supports the safety and effectiveness of these canned fruits using or mixing the two sweeteners separately and in accordance with the prescribed standards.
The use of such sweeteners is beneficial to consumers and the industry by providing a sweetener alternative that helps reduce the sugar content of canned fruits, so Health Canada recommends amending the food and drug regulations to allow the use of acetyl sulfonamide to the highest standard of 0.007%. Potassium acid (Acesulfame-potassium), the highest standard of 0.025% use sucralose, or mix for canned fruit that is not specified in sub-standard Section B.11.101.
, while fulfilling the formal regulatory procedures, as part of its efforts to improve the resilience of the coordination mechanism, issued this Interim Marketing License (IMA) to allow potassium acetylfame-potassium and sucralose as sweeteners to be used directly in apples, peaches, pears, pineapples, wenzhou honey oranges, fruits and tropical fruit salad cans as sweeteners.
proposed to co-ordinate the measures for the permitted sale of sweeteners containing potassium acesulfame-potassium and sucralose.
security assessments support revised measures with less impact on the economy and the environment.
, this coordinated amendment can be approved directly and published in part II of the Official Gazette of Canada.
