In recent studies, thermal insulation coatings based on microporous particles from Pickering emulsion polymerization have been described.

This new material can be used as a new functional filler for coatings for thermal insulation applications.

During the research process, the microporous polystyrene sphere (MPS) com" href="">coating online coatingol.
com was successfully prepared by Pickering emulsion polymerization .
Amino-functionalized silica nanoparticles are used to stabilize the emulsion, and isooctane is used to induce a mesoporous structure.
In order to verify that the prepared MPS has a porous structure, the morphology and pore size were studied by SEM and BET, and the near-infrared light reflectance and visible light transmittance of the coating with microspheres in the epoxy soybean oil acrylic resin coating were also measured.
    .
Through the thermal conductivity and heat transfer rate tests, the thermal insulation performance of MPS filled coatings was systematically studied.

    Improve thermal insulation

Compared with traditional hollow glass beads, the coating prepared by adding MPS has higher near-infrared reflectivity, better visible light transmittance and equivalent heat insulation capacity.

As the researchers said, the results show that the introduction of MPS will enable the coating to have lower thermal conductivity and higher light and heat shielding properties, thereby improving the thermal insulation properties of the coating.

The prepared MPS can be used as a functional filler for a new type of thermal insulation coating, thereby saving energy consumption in a series of fields.

This research has been published in Volume 151 of "Progress in Organic Coatings" in February 2021.
