The main risk factors for gallstone disease (GD) are female sex, pregnancy, genetic predisposition factors, contraception and obesi.

We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of patients following bariatric surgery using UD.

Results of the study showed that prophylactic use of UDCA was associated with (i) a reduction in gallstone formation (OR=25, 95%CI=21–31), and (ii) a reduction in the incidence of symptomatic gallstone disease (GD) ( OR=29, 95%CI=20–42), (iii) and cholecystectomy rate was also reduced (OR=33, 95%CI=20–5
