Lancet advises: 21 steps to avoid 39 million deaths worldwide!

The UN's Sustainable Development Goals call for reducing premature deaths from chronic non-communicable diseases by one-third between 2015 and 2030

A recent Lancet article published 21 essential interventions for low- and middle-income countries that are cost-effective and feasible

The article estimates that these measures would cost an average of $18 billion a year between 2023 and 2030, but 39 million deaths could be avoided, with an average net economic benefit of $2.

Although countries' ability to prevent and treat chronic diseases varies widely, cross-sectoral policies targeting tobacco, alcohol and unhealthy diets are essential for all countries and account for two-thirds of overall mortality reduction, the article said.

Cardiovascular disease interventions are estimated to feature prominently, probably because ischaemic heart disease and stroke are the leading causes of death from chronic diseases in almost all countries, and the effects of interventions are rapid
