Introduction: People with diabetes are susceptible to dementia, and those with more healthy lifestyle habits will have a significantly lower
A large sample study found that people with diabetes who follow 7 healthy lifestyle habits, including 7-9 hours of sleep per day, frequent social interaction, healthy eating, regular exercise and avoid sitting for a long time, will have a significantly lower
170,000 people, followed up for 12 years
The study conducted a health questionnaire survey of 167946 diabetic and non-diabetic patients aged 60 years or older, calculated participants' healthy lifestyle scores (0-7 points), and followed up for 12 years, and none of the participants had dementia when they were enrolled
The 7 healthy lifestyle habits in the score include:
➤ Do not smoke;
➤ Moderate alcohol consumption, up to one drink per day for women and two drinks per day for men;
➤ Regularly engage in at least 2.
➤ 7-9 hours of sleep per day;
➤ Healthy diet, including more fruits, vegetables, whole grains and fish, and less refined grains, processed and unprocessed meats;
➤ Reduce sedentary immobility, such as watching TV for less than 4 hours a day;
➤ Frequent social contacts, including living with others, meeting with friends or family at least once a month, and attending social events
Follow 7 healthy habits with a 54% reduction in dementia risk and 11% reduction for each additional one
After 12 years of follow-up, a total of 4351 people developed dementia, and diabetics who followed less than 2 healthy lifestyle habits had 4 times more risk of dementia than non-diabetic patients who followed 7 habits; Among the participants who followed the 7 habits, people with diabetes had a 74%
Of the 7 habits of diabetes, 21 developed dementia, or 7474 person-years (0.
After adjusting for factors such as age, education level, and ethnicity, diabetics who followed all habits had a 54% lower risk of developing dementia than people with 2 or fewer habits, and for every additional healthy habit people developed, their risk was reduced by 11%.
Summary of this article
This study suggests that people with diabetes who maintain a healthier lifestyle may greatly reduce their risk of developing dementia, and that this association is not affected by the medications they take or the factors that control the quality of blood sugar
