July 12, 2021 , published in "PNAS" "PNAS" , a study found , liver fibrosis may be designed to combine with mesothelin protein immunization to treat toxins

What is mesothelin ? Mesothelin is rarely found in healthy people
    .

Only cancer cells and collagen-producing liver cells ( portal fibroblasts ) can make this protein

What is mesothelin ? Mesothelin is rarely found in healthy people

Normal liver tissue (left) does not produce mesothelin, while the liver tissue of patients with primary sclerosing cholangitis does (right, darker staining)

In this study, in order to test Pastan's immunotoxin in the context of liver fibrosis, the researchers first needed an animal model

The results of the study found that compared with untreated mice, 60% to 100% of human mesothelin-producing cells were killed by immunotoxins, thereby reducing collagen deposition

In addition , anti-mesothelin immunotoxins are safe for humans, which may accelerate their clinical application
