The results of the largest real-world study of the domestically produced new crown vaccine released

On the evening of April 16th, Beijing time, the Chilean Ministry of Health announced the real-world research results of the Coxing New Crown vaccine.

Before talking about this hugely anticipated result, let's take a look at the current epidemic situation in Chile.

How is the situation in Chile now?

There are two seemingly contradictory aspects of the Chilean epidemic.

First, Chile is currently one of the regions with the highest COVID-19 vaccination rate in the world.

Second, the number of new daily cases in Chile has continued to rise recently.

Since the beginning of February this year, Chile has ushered in a new wave of epidemic peaks.

Historical experience shows that the importance of vaccines to control the spread of the epidemic is beyond doubt, and Chile still has a large number of new cases in the case of mass vaccination, and most of the vaccines currently vaccinated in Chile are Coxing’s inactivated vaccines.

How effective is Kexing vaccine?

Moving on to the topic, let’s analyze the results of Chile’s research in detail.

One sentence summary: very good.

I didn't say this sentence, it was said by Paula Daza, the Deputy Minister of Health of Chile.

This real-world study in Chile is currently one of the largest studies in the world, with more than 6 million people participating in the study.

Chile has currently received more than 12.

There are currently two new coronavirus vaccines in Chile, namely CoronaVac and Pfizer-BioNTech.
However, the number of inoculations by Coxing is far more than that of Pfizer (90.

As mentioned earlier, Chile has recently ushered in a wave of epidemic peaks.
But if we analyze the age groups of the new cases, we will find that compared with the peak of the epidemic in May last year, the infected people this time are more concentrated in the young and middle-aged groups.

Due to the limited supply of vaccines, vaccines are given priority to the elderly.

Researchers in Chile conducted a cohort study, matching vaccinated and unvaccinated people according to age, sex, income, comorbidities, etc.

In the end, the effective rate of Coxing Vaccine in Chile's official world real research is as follows:

Overall effective rate: 67%

Effective rate of preventing hospitalization: 85%

Effective rate of preventing ICU: 89%

Effective rate of death prevention: 80%

Explain this set of data in the simplest terms.

If 100 people were originally infected with the new coronavirus, our vaccine could protect 67 of them from symptoms;

If 100 people would have died because of the new coronavirus, our vaccine could protect 80 of them from death.

There is also a very important point.
Real-world studies have confirmed the importance of complete vaccination.
Let's analyze the effective data in detail.

Take the overall effective rate, for example, 14 days after the first shot of the vaccine, the overall effective rate was 16%; and 14 days after the second shot, the overall effective rate increased to 67%;

Taking the effective rate of death prevention, for example, 14 days after the first shot of the vaccine, the effective rate of preventing death was 40%; and 14 days after the second shot of the vaccine, the effective rate of preventing death increased to 80%.

This is the importance of complete vaccination.

With just one shot, the vaccine will not be able to exert its maximum effect.
The vaccinators still have a higher probability of contracting the virus and developing symptoms.
Only a complete vaccination can effectively lower the curve.

So the conclusion of the Chilean Ministry of Health's study is:

In the case of a pandemic, vaccination of susceptible people (the elderly and patients with chronic diseases) can effectively reduce the probability of symptoms of infection and severe illness;

Because there is no 100% effective vaccine, full vaccination is very important;

In addition to vaccinations, public health measures (such as washing hands frequently and wearing masks to maintain social distancing) are also important, and it is also important to restrict the movement of people.

Therefore, after actual combat tests, the effectiveness of Kexing vaccine has been fully demonstrated.

What enlightenment does this research give us?

Let us return to the seemingly contradictory question at the beginning of the article.
Chile still has a large number of new cases despite the large-scale vaccination.
There are two main reasons.

The first reason is the vaccine.
With only one shot of the vaccine, the protection rate is limited, and the current vaccination rate has not reached a level sufficient to suppress the spread of the virus.

In this regard, Israel is a very typical example.

Israel’s vaccination rate is the highest in the world, but Israel’s data also fully demonstrates that when vaccination does not reach a high rate, the effect of vaccines is limited.

The figure below shows the data of the outbreak in Israel on January 27.
As of this day, 51 out of every 100 people in Israel have been vaccinated with 51 doses, which is similar to the current situation in Chile.
Also on this day, there were more than 11,000 new cases in Israel in a single day, reaching a record high.

So we can see that even if Israel uses the most efficient vaccine in the world, even if more than 50 shots are given to 100 people, the epidemic will still reach its peak.

This is because the vaccination rate is far from reaching the barrier sufficient to reduce the spread of the virus, and for the vaccine to be fully effective, it is necessary to wait 7 to 14 days after the second injection.
There is a time difference here.

The second reason is social prevention and control.

The outbreak of new cases in Chile under vaccination was largely due to the Chilean government's early relaxation of social control.

The drop in new cases in Israel and the UAE after mass vaccination has given the Chilean government an illusion that restrictions on travel, business and schools have been relaxed prematurely.
For example, Chile abolished school control on March 1, allowing students to return to school.
This led to a sharp increase in new cases, especially among young people, in March.

We can also see this from the graph of Chile's real-world study.
The elderly benefited from vaccine protection, and the infection rate was well controlled, while the lack of vaccination among young people, coupled with the relaxation of social prevention and control, became the fastest growing group of infection rates.

In general, the Chilean real-world study is the first real test of a domestic vaccine.
The results are encouraging.
This result also provides guidance for the next prevention and control work in our country:

To achieve herd immunity, the vaccination rate needs to reach a very high value;

Don't go out as soon as you finish the vaccine.
It will take some time for the vaccine to be fully effective;

Even after the vaccine is given, it is still very important to do a good job of personal protection.

Vaccines are important, but vaccines are not the only answer.
